Dea dei Libri publishes stories of daring escapades and delightfully unruly heroines caught up in whirlwind romance.
Once upon a time...
.... there was a girl who loved to read any and all books she could get her hands on. Harry Potter. Percy Jackson. Valkyrie Cain. The heroes of her childhood. Then she found romance. Historical fiction and the love between a gladiator and a slave girl. Warriors in steamy paranormal romance fighting the Titans who'd taken over the heavens in the 21st century from the Greek Gods. These characters fought to live - and love - on their own terms. Some characters were good, some were morally questionable, all were fierce in their own way and inspired dreams that stuck around.
A dream to write the same captivating stories featuring impossible loves, rebellious women, and a touch of reality wrapped in wry humor was born. Of bold journeys, unruly heroines, and just the right amount of chaos. Something that would make people feel just a fraction of all the emotions the books that left a mark evoked in me.
So I started writing. To cope, to process, to dream. To keep that fire alive whenever I felt too much. Whenever I thought I'd burst from all the things within me that needed an outlet. Those snippets of scenes and stories suddenly came alive, into real characters that had a life and their own backstories and reasons for being. And the ideas kept coming. So I finished writing my first book. Then another.
By my third attempt, I thought I can do this. I could publish it. But the world of publishing is difficult terrain to navigate. Agents and query letters and hybrid publishing companies that promised a little bang for a lot of buck.
And then, my best friend who's also a writer and much more business-savvy than I am, said, "I think I'm going to do it myself."
And that was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.
During drinks with a colleague, I broached the subject. She looked at me and said, "That's what I did."
Like, who are these fierce and fearless women and how am I lucky enough to be in their lives? To be inspired by them and made to believe that hell, I can do it, too?
The dream I had to write stories suddenly seemed so much bigger and scarier than just coming up with a plot and dress the words in a pretty cover. But it's the kind of scary that's pushed me toward someplace I never thought I'd end up.
And that is the story of how Dea dei Libri came to be.
Welcome to my world. I hope you'll enjoy my stories of daring escapades and delightfully unruly heroines caught up in whirlwind romance!
VSK is a globe-trotting adventurer, martial artist, and storyteller of strong women, daring escapades, and delightfully rebellious heroines.
Dea dei Libri is her publishing company.
Love: So many things! the process of seeing the plot and the characters evolve, the spark of elation whenever I get a new idea and it just turns into a beautiful scene that fits into whatever’s been missing! The creativity!
Hate: Editing–it's time consuming and often I’m ready to move on to a new chapter, scene or book project. But when things click, it's such a satisfying feeling!
Three questions from my readers:
What's a key message you'd like to pass along to other booklovers?
That all those things you feel when you read a book that crushes your soul, that makes you fall in love with a character or a whole new world, that somehow shreds you and puts you back together again-you’re not alone. It’s amazing, to be connected through books. It helps us learn, evolve, heal. And I hope you never stop reading!
Do you have a writing ritual?
Not really. I take the chance to write wherever i can. On the bus, when I have my morning coffee. I always have a note book with me in case I get ideas on the go. I do love getting cozy in the corner of my couch with a ridiculously large cup of tea, though. That and an uninterrupted stretch of time is my go-to writing routine. Oh, and music! So much of my writing is fueled by music. Angsty playlists from my teenage years when I’m in a mood. Still and soulful playlists when I’m feeling more serene (or tired).
What kind of themes and stories are you drawn to?
Deeply flawed characters facing impossible odds, preferably with douchebags getting in their way and requiring relentless efforts to overcome the obstacles standing in the way of their goals. I love a touch of sarcasm, fake dating and the “who did this to you” tropes, I don’t care if they’re cliché!
